Ionisation Smoke Detectors

Ionisation Smoke Detectors

Ionisation smoke detectors (ISDs) are fire sensors that contain radioactive material such as 241Am. Due to their radioactive content ISDs are today being gradually phased out  and replaced by optical or heat sensitive smoke detectors. Normally ISDs  are not a health risk owing to the slight amount of radiation involved. ISDs may only be operated without a permit if they are type approved. The disposal may only be undertaken by a certified waste hauler with handling permit. After a fire the remains of a building needs to be searched for any smoke detectors. If they are not all found the whole of the rubble is required to be disposed of as hazardous waste.
